Training Dates: December 6th – 22nd, 2025 (3 Weekends)
Training Mode: In-person & Virtual, Full-day, Hands-on Training
1. Introduction
Geospatial data analytics has become a cornerstone for decision-making and problem-solving across various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, business, finance, and environmental or project monitoring & evaluation. The ability to interpret and utilize spatial data is indispensable for professionals in these fields, particularly when leveraging cutting-edge tools and techniques such as satellite imagery analysis, spatial forecasting, and geospatial data management.
2. About DATA+ Rwanda
DATA+ Rwanda is a private organization dedicated to providing research consultancy services, professional capacity building, and investment in breakthrough technology solutions in Rwanda. Through tailored training programs and consultancy services, DATA+ Rwanda empowers professionals, organizations, and institutions with the skills and knowledge needed to drive impactful decision-making and sustainable development.
In collaboration with experienced trainers, DATA+ Rwanda is offering an intensive, hands-on Geospatial Data Analytics Training. This training will equip professionals from diverse sectors with the skills needed to analyze geospatial data for actionable insights. Whether you're a project manager, data scientist, agriculturalist, M&E officer, or economist, this training will provide practical tools that can be immediately applied to your work.
3. Training Objectives
This training program aims to provide professionals with the following skills and knowledge:
- Understanding Geospatial Data Types & Formats
Gain practical knowledge of various data types such as vector (points, lines, polygons) and raster (gridded data), including the formats they are typically stored in (e.g., Shapefiles, GeoJSON, GeoTIFF). Learn how to import, manipulate, and export geospatial data using industry-standard software tools.
- Coordinate Systems & Projections
Learn how to work with geographic and projected coordinate systems, including transforming between different projections and datums. This is essential for accurate spatial analysis across different geographies.
- Geospatial Data Analysis Techniques
Perform common geospatial analysis tasks such as:
- Buffering: Creating zones of influence around features.
- Overlay Analysis: Combining multiple data layers to understand spatial relationships.
- Proximity Analysis: Identifying spatial relationships between features (e.g., nearest neighbor analysis).
- Spatial Interpolation: Estimating values in unsampled areas using techniques like Kriging and Inverse Distance Weighting.
- Satellite Image Analysis: Learn how to work with satellite images for land-use classification, vegetation analysis (e.g., NDVI), and change detection.
- Advanced GIS Analysis: Focus on two high-impact geospatial analysis techniques: Selection Analysis: Determine the most suitable locations for businesses, infrastructure, or services based on key factors like accessibility, demographics, and market potential.
- Data Visualization and Reporting
Learn how to create interactive maps, heatmaps, and 3D visualizations to effectively communicate geospatial data findings. This section will emphasize presenting data in a way that is easily understandable and actionable for decision-makers.
- Geospatial Software & Tools: Hands-on training with industry-leading tools like ArcMap, Google Earth Engine, and Python libraries (e.g., Geopandas, ArcPy, OSMnx). You’ll learn how to process, analyze, and visualize geospatial data efficiently using these powerful platforms.
4. Training Methodology
The training will focus on hands-on practice, allowing participants to apply the concepts learned immediately. Real-world case studies from various sectors (healthcare, agriculture, business, etc.) will be incorporated, and participants will work on projects that they can use in their professional roles. Trainers, who are experienced practitioners in the field of geospatial data analytics, will guide participants through practical exercises and real-time projects.
5. Training Schedule
This comprehensive 6-day training will be delivered over three weekends (Saturday and Sunday), each day focusing on different aspects of geospatial data analysis.
Weekend 1:
- Day 1: Introduction to Geospatial Data Types, Formats, and Coordinate Systems
- Day 2: Vector Data Analysis, Coordinate Transformation, and Projections
Weekend 2:
- Day 5: Site selection analysis
- Day 6: Data Visualization, Reporting, and Software Tools (GEE, ArcMap, Python)
Weekend 3:
- Day 3: Raster Data Analysis and Satellite Image Processing
- Day 4: Geospatial Analysis Techniques (Buffering, Overlay Analysis, Spatial Joins)
