Senior Electronics Engineer

About the role

As part of this mission, Ampersand requires high-tech equipment and complex financing in order to leap-frog the old transport system. Ampersand manufactures electric 2-wheelers, lithium battery packs and charge/swap stations in Kigali.
We require someone with a broad understanding of electromechanical systems that can assist with all aspects of the vehicle drive train R&D including but not limited to working with high power inverters, PMSM motors as well as low-voltage battery systems. We work hands and require our employees to have rapid prototyping skills. Ideally have read the Art of Electronics end to end. You will report to the Head of Electrical systems and also lead a team of younger electrical engineers when needed.
• Solid/demonstrable understanding of power electronics, DC/DCs, battery systems, inverters.
• Solid/demonstrable experience in PCB design from schematic capture to layout
• Proven experience in writing firmwares for embedded microcontrollers (C/C++) with knowledge of RTOS and automotive best coding practices.
• Some experience in manufacturing of PCBA for both prototyping and high volume.

Minimum requirements
A strong work ethic, and the ability to manage shifting priorities and unforeseen challenges.
• Minimum 5 years of prior industry experience in working with automotive or power systems roles.
• Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Out of the box thinker, able to boil down complex problems into simple designs.
• Fantastic communicator
• Solid understanding of automotive communication networks such as CANBus, UDS, etc.
• Good C/C++ programming skills
• Good CAD/CAM/FEA skills
• Good comprehension of Matlab and Excel
• Able to go from design to manufacturing (DFM)
• You are a doer; you move quickly and iterate now on how to prioritize and get things done.

About the role
Ampersand manages a fleet of batteries that our moto drivers change at one of our many Swap Stations. These batteries are used by more than 500 vehicles across multiple countries, which make 5 million km every month and swapped thousands of times a day. We are on our way to release more than 2000 batteries and vehicles in the next year.
All this data is collected and utilized by the infrastructure and tools that our software team develops in house. We would like to rethink how we approach collecting and making use of this vast amount of data to make us ready for scaling further.

This would be a role in the Software Engineering team of the Engineering organization. Your objectives will include the following:
• Set up and improve Ampersand’s data infrastructure and pipelines, improve data quality and efficiency
• Introduce data engineering concepts/tools and establish the culture in software engineering team
• Help to shape Ampersand’s digital products through data driven decision making
• Shape the data backend of Ampersand to allow for business intelligence to be easily extracted.
• Harness machine learning as a way of optimizing Ampersands charging and battery infrastructure.
• Mentor team members on how to use data engineering tools and integrate them in our daily work
• Lead and review devops of the digital portfolio (Android app and AmperOps platform)
• Ensure synergy between hardware and software by communicating and influencing decisions with other engineering team

Minimum requirements
• Minimum of 6 years of prior experience in Software Development
• At least 2-3 years of experience in Data Engineering
• Degree in computer science/electrical engineering is a bonus, but experience is also valued
• Technical abilities with Linux, Bash, VM’s, Docker, Networks, Distributed systems
• Writing code in Python/Go/Java/JS when needed to assist in components of the process
• Experience in cloud systems (we use Azure)
• Hands-on experience with commonly used Data Engineering tools (Apache Airflow, Tableau, Looker, Kafka.)
• Familiarity with Scrum and Agile
• A strong work ethic, and the ability to manage shifting priorities and unforeseen challenges

About the role
Ampersand is looking for a competent and reliable Construction Engineer to join the Construction department to ensure high quality, cost effective, timely and safe construction projects. The Construction Engineer will lead all technical execution of the projects by ensuring the compliance of the construction with design and all other regulations, coordinating all the site works with the contractors, set and implement quality control procedures during construction, enforce Health and safety construction guidelines among others.

Responsibilities

• Interpret and ensure the compliance of the drawings and site construction( setting out, surveys)
• Provide technical guidance to contractors during the execution to enforce quality workmanship
• Prepare the required bills of quantities and ensure the time delivery of required materials and equipment on site
• Produce construction shop drawings required for both designers and contractors
• Review the design drawings from the designers and advice in case there might be an issue and assist in permitting process
• Apply and enforce quality control and quality assurance procedures on site
• Inspect the supplied materials and confirm the compliance on quality before use
• Enforce HSE standards on a construction site
• Prepare site reports and other paperwork required
• Oversee all the civil maintenances at all ampersand operating facilities

Minimum requirements
We are seeking qualified and motivated personnel with a deep knowledge and experience in the construction field. You are encouraged to apply if you meet the following:
• A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in construction industry
• 2-3 years of experience as a site engineer
• Degree in civil engineering/structural engineering/Water & Environmental Engineering
• Registered in Institution of Rwanda Engineers
• Deep knowledge on complex construction drawings interpretation
• Basic knowledge of cad softwares such as Autocad, Revit, Archcad,..
• Strong understanding of general maintenance processes and methods
• Working knowledge of tools, common appliances, and devices
• Written and verbal communication skills

• Willingness to work over the weekends or on holidays whenever requested

Access Project Engineer/RUEAP (1)
Key roles/responsibilities
• Monitor the design and manufacturing activities, the installation and erection on site and construction work.
• Study the Drawings, Specification, Conditions of Contract and Bill of Quantities and understand the nature and scope of the Contract and familiarize herself/himself with all the documents in order that she/he can visualize the way the work will be carried out.
• Review of design drawings and give approval based on the detailed engineering study and the requirements enumerated by Program planning department in the tender document.
• Review the quality assurance plan of the contractor and approve the material source and the materials to be used in the construction by private contractors and/or Program’s construction team.
• Control of Materials and Stores for the projects/programmes and coordinate material delivery and handoff to contractor and Program’s construction teams.
• Assist the project manager with development of the critical path project schedule to ensure realistic and achievable project activities duration and sequence.
• Undertake review of the project progress and ensure its timely completion.
• Undertake construction management, testing and quality control of the works done.
• Certify payment.
• Monitor and evaluate all activities of the contractors for effectiveness, completeness, and compliance with safety standards by inspecting work in the field, reviewing daily work reports, and providing feedback.
• Cooperate and communicate effectively with project manager and other project participants to provide assistance and technical support.
• Identify limitations / hold ups for progress of Site Works and co-ordinate to resolve those issues.
• Act as liaison between landowners and contractors.
• Prepare Program annual work plans.
• Prepare & Submit Daily / Weekly / Monthly reports.

Qualifications and experience:
• At least a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or other related field with at least one (3) year of proven relevant experience.
• Two (2) year Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering, or other related field.
