Purpose of the Role

The Data Scientist designs and implements solutions to complex business challenges by applying advanced data mining, analysis, and modelling techniques. The role leverages both internal and external data sources—traditional and alternative—to drive innovative product development, enhance decision-making, and shape organizational strategy. A key focus is promoting financial inclusion through data-driven insights and solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop modelling solutions to address complex business problems, enhancing the organization’s ability to leverage data for financial inclusion.
  • Explore and apply advanced techniques on large and unstructured datasets to identify optimal business solutions.
  • Recognize and apply the time-value of data in decision-making.
  • Communicate analytical results effectively to stakeholders in clear business language.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to design innovative information products and present insights compellingly.
  • Conduct data analysis to define challenges and scope of work.
  • Build analytical tools to generate insights, identify patterns, and predict customer behavior.
  • Deliver actionable content directly to users of information products.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Line Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in data analytics, modelling, or software development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or Information Technology. A Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • Strong coding and software development skills.
  • Advanced mathematical and statistical expertise.
  • Experience with Big Data techniques.
  • Proficiency in SQL and data warehouse environments.
  • Strong knowledge of IT systems, policies, and processes.
  • Hands-on experience with R and Python.
  • Machine learning and predictive modelling expertise.
  • Solid background in advanced analytical methods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a solution-oriented and innovative mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Self-motivated, energetic, enthusiastic, and proactive.

Advantageous Experience and Skills

  • Knowledge of financial and management accounting.
  • Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP).
  • Familiarity with Hadoop, MapReduce, and Apache Spark.
  • Experience with data visualization coding tools (e.g., D3.js).
  • Experience working with H2O.
