CALL FOR APPLICATION

HACKATHON FOR DECENT WORK AND THE FUTURE OF WORK

Youth visions on decent work

Do you want to develop new ideas about the world of work of tomorrow through a hackathon?

What you need to know

What is a hackathon?

The term “hackathon” is the combination of “hack” and “marathon,” but don't let the word “hack” fool you. In our context, a hackathon is an event where people with the same background and interests come together to collaborate and solve a problem or identify new opportunities through teamwork. The theme of our hackathon is “Youth Visions on Decent Work”.

When and where will the event take place?

The event will take place in Kigali, FES Office, on 26-28 March 2024

What is expected in this hackathon?

On the first day, participants will work in a team of 3-5 participants to identify problems around decent work and the world of work of tomorrow. On the second day, they will focus on transforming ideas and finding solutions while the pitching and final presentation will be on the third day.

Why should I participate?

This Hackathon will bring together creative and innovative youths to create, learn, and have fun while developing new ideas about decent work in Rwanda and the world of work of tomorrow. The hackathon is also a team-building challenge. Your input to the whole team is valuable. The hackathon furthermore gives you the chance to set your voice heard by decision makers and become an active part of the development of your country.

Can I participate if it is my first time to do a hackathon?

Participating in the hackathon is an excellent way for beginners to learn, collaborate, and contribute solutions. Furthermore, we will have mentorship sessions and mentors to guide you before the competition event.

What does the winner get?

This Hackathon is not really about winning the prize. It is an exposure, a learning experience, and playing an awesome contribution to problem-solving about decent work in Rwanda. You will gain more knowledge about the world of work of tomorrow, you learn about idea generation, working with others, how to test and improve your ideas, how to present your work to stakeholders and much more. Additionally, teams will have their pitches published on the FES website and shared within FES networks. The winning team will produce a report document containing their innovative solutions that will be shared (by the winning team) in 12 capacity-building workshops for trade unionists from the tea, mining, and education sector.

Should I pay a participation fee for this hackathon?

No. This hackathon is free of charge. Transport and accommodation are provided according to the FES travel rules and financial guidelines.

Who is eligible to apply?

This hackathon is open to Rwandan youth between 25 to 35 years old. Applicants should already have gained first experiences in a working context.
