COUNTRY PROGRAM MISSION:

Alight Rwanda, formerly known as the American Refugee Committee, has been a key player in delivering impactful humanitarian programs since 1994. Operating in all six refugee camps in Rwanda, Alight provides integrated services in protection, health, livelihoods, and community development. The organization has pioneered initiatives like the SASA! methodology to promote gender equality, reduce GBV, and empower vulnerable populations. By fostering resilience and innovation, Alight Rwanda continues to make meaningful and sustainable contributions to refugee and host communities.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Provide accurate and confidential interpretation and translation services to support protection, health, and other humanitarian services, ensuring effective communication between refugees and service providers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Interpretation Services

  • Provide real-time interpretation between Arabic/Amharic and English
  • Support interviews, case management, medical consultations, and meetings
  • Ensure accuracy, neutrality, and completeness of interpretation

2. Translation Support

  • Translate documents, forms, and communication materials as required
  • Ensure culturally appropriate and clear translations

3. Support to Protection Programming

  • Assist CP and GBV teams during case identification and referrals
  • Ensure survivor-centered and confidential communication
  • Support safe disclosure during sensitive interviews

4. Confidentiality and Ethics

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information
  • Adhere to safeguarding and PSEA policies
  • Remain neutral and impartial at all times

5. Coordination

  • Work closely with protection, health, and other sector teams
  • Support communication between community members and service providers

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or degree in languages, social sciences, or related field
  • Fluency in Arabic or Amharic and English (spoken and written)
  • At least 2 years of experience in interpretation/translation
  • Experience in humanitarian settings is an asset

  • Strong listening and interpretation accuracy
  • High level of integrity and confidentiality
  • Cultural sensitivity and professionalism

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Based in Gashora ETM
  • Frequent interaction with vulnerable populations
  • May involve high-stress and sensitive situations
