Job Purpose and Key responsibilities
Job Purpose:
The Technical Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of the Company's technical functions, including underwriting, reinsurance, product development, risk assessment, and portfolio management. The role is accountable for driving sustainable profitability, ensuring sound risk management practices, enhancing operational effectiveness and maintaining compliance with regulatory and Group governance requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the Company’s technical strategy in alignment with Britam Group strategy, business objectives, risk appetite, and market opportunities to achieve sustainable growth and profitability.
- Provide strategic technical leadership and advisory support to the CEO, Executive Management, and Board on underwriting, reinsurance, product development, portfolio performance, and emerging industry trends.
- Lead underwriting governance and oversight to ensure effective risk selection, appropriate pricing, portfolio quality, and adherence to underwriting standards and risk appetite.
- Develop and implement reinsurance strategies that optimize risk transfer, capital efficiency, protection structures, and overall portfolio resilience.
- Oversee reinsurance placement and management including treaty negotiations, facultative arrangements, reinsurer relationships, broker engagement, and monitoring of reinsurance effectiveness.
- Drive product development and portfolio optimization initiatives through market analysis, profitability reviews, product enhancements, and alignment with customer and business needs.
- Establish and maintain technical frameworks, policies, and guidelines to strengthen underwriting discipline, risk management practices, and operational consistency.
- Monitor and improve portfolio performance through analysis of key technical indicators including loss ratios, combined ratios, claims trends, pricing adequacy, and underwriting profitability.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) directives, insurance laws, Group standards, and governance frameworks through effective oversight of technical controls, regulatory reporting, policy adherence, and implementation of regulatory changes impacting underwriting, reinsurance, and product management.
- Lead technical transformation and operational excellence initiatives through process improvement, automation, data-driven decision-making, and adoption of best practices.
- Collaborate with Claims, Finance, Risk, Actuarial, and Business Development teams to drive profitable growth and ensure alignment across the insurance value chain.
- Support strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting, and business performance reviews by providing technical insights and recommendations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key external stakeholders including regulators, reinsurers, brokers, industry partners, and other strategic stakeholders.
- Lead, coach, and develop technical teams by fostering a high-performance culture, building technical capability, and ensuring effective succession planning.
- Provide oversight on technical reporting and management information to support informed decision-making by Executive Management and the Board.
- Identify emerging insurance risks and market developments and recommend appropriate strategies to enhance competitiveness and business sustainability.
- Champion a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement across technical functions to support long-term organizational success.
Knowledge, experience and qualifications required
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in insurance, Actuarial Science, Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Master's Degree is an added advantage.
- Professional qualifications such as ACII, FCII, AIIK, or an equivalent insurance certification is highly desirable.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in General Insurance technical operations.
- At least 3–5 years in a senior leadership role managing underwriting, reinsurance, or technical functions.
- Proven experience in underwriting, reinsurance, portfolio management, product development, and regulatory compliance.
