Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main purpose of job:
The successful candidate will be joining the British High Commission Kigali’s (BHC) Political and Governance team to deliver high quality communications campaigns and products, and lead on our events and engagement strategy.
BHC Kigali’s Political and Governance team leads on our political engagement with the Government of Rwanda, and provides governance programme support to Rwanda’s development vision. The team works with Rwandan and international partners to support public sector governance and accountability, human rights and media freedoms, and to communicate our work the British and Rwandan public.
This is an exciting time to join the British High Commission Kigali. The role is stretching and high priority, and we will provide regular opportunities for learning and development tailored to the individual’s needs, and support career development.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
Communications strategy and delivery:
• With the supervision of the Second Secretary Political, lead on the BHC’s communications strategy to secure high-profile media coverage of UK activities. Working across all parts of the BHC Kigali, and with London, this will include sourcing content for social media platforms, and identifying and maximising opportunities for media engagement;
• Day to day management of the BHC Kigali’s social media accounts and website. Ensuring that the BHCs messaging and interactions on the various platforms are accurate, timely, and effective.
• Monitoring Rwanda’s media and cultural landscape to identify opportunities for the BHC to engage.
• To maintain a wide network of online, press, radio and TV media contacts to facilitate interviews, op-eds, articles and responses to engage Rwandans on the bilateral relationship.

Events and campaigns

• To lead on organising BHC Kigali events, and major campaigns (e.g. talks, receptions or exhibitions), including the annual King’s Birthday Party. This includes working with teams to develop and plan events, and working with the Residence team to ensure impactful delivery. This will require creativity and innovation.
• Lead on the BHC’s engagement with the GREAT campaign, including bidding for funding from the GREAT Challenge Fund.
• To work with the British Council and other relevant UK partners to help promote joint campaigns and messaging in Rwanda.
• With Second Secretary lead on comms elements of VIP/ ministerial events
• Draw together lessons learned following events and campaigns

Wider reporting and programme support to the Political and Governance Team, and the British High Commission Kigali
• Feed in to political/context reporting
• Support IPF and other Political and Governance programming
• Contribute to BHC Kigali crisis planning

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
• Knowledge of latest communications techniques/approaches and experience of working with them; including in particular social media skills (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
• Experience in successfully designing, planning and organising events
• A proactive approach and a focus on continuous improvement of self and service, with an appetite to work with others to simplify processes and improve efficiency.
• Experience in building and maintaining a network of contacts Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
• Experience in delivering marketing campaigns
• A good understanding of Rwanda’s media, political and culture scene
