Background

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate training and research in mathematical sciences, and public engagement in STEM. Its mission is to empower talented young Africans to be creative leaders in Science and Technology. The first AIMS centre opened in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2003. Since 2011, AIMS has established additional centres in Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, and two Centres in Rwanda.

Each AIMS Centre provides expertly tailored academic and non-academic programs, training around 60 African students per master's program each year and preparing them for leadership in the domains of academia, government and industry. The AIMS academic program relies on top international lecturers who teach in a 24-hour learning environment.

Graphic Design Analyst!

Based at the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre and reporting to the Communications Manager, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, the Graphic Design Analyst will be responsible for creating visually compelling content, including graphic design, motion graphics, and video editing, to support our various programs and projects. You will also have some experience in communication, understanding how to convey messages effectively through visual media.

The Graphic Design Analyst will develop eye-catching visual content for various communication channels, including graphics, illustrations, motion graphics, and video editing; collaborate with teams to understand program requirements and create content that aligns with program objectives; and assist in producing promotional materials, event banners, social media visuals, and other design assets.

As a skilful Graphic Designer, you will support multiple departments with content creation needs, ensuring brand consistency and high-quality output; coordinate with the Communication Manager and other team members to manage content schedules and deadlines; offer creative input and ideas to enhance the visual communication strategy; and also help maintain and organize the digital asset library to ensure easy access to design resources.

This is a one-year full-time contract opportunity based in Kigali, Rwanda.

Qualifications or Requirements

  • Recently completed a degree in communication, training in Graphic Design, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in leading design and content-development platforms, including Canva and the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects).
  • Strong understanding of design principles, typography, and visual storytelling.
  • Some experience with communication concepts and the ability to translate ideas into compelling visual content.
  • A portfolio showcasing previous graphic design and motion graphics projects.
  • Familiarity with video editing techniques and tools.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Detail-oriented, organised, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of AIMS.

Experience Needed

Some experience with communication concepts and the ability to translate ideas into compelling visual content.
