Reports to: Legal and Litigation Manager
Location: Kigali
General description
The Legal Officer is responsible for providing legal support and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations across COPEDU PLC’s operations. This role involves preparing, reviewing, and executing legal documents, advising management on legal risks, and supporting corporate governance matters to protect COPEDU PLC's interests.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and guidance to various departments on regulatory compliance, contracts, operations, finance, and human resource matters.
- Interpret laws, regulations, and judicial decisions to guide company policies and business decisions.
- Monitor changes in legal and regulatory frameworks and advise management on potential impacts.
- Conduct legal research and issue legal opinions to ensure compliance with applicable laws and internal policies.
- Draft, review, and support the execution of legal documents including contracts, agreements, NDAs, and MOUs.
- Ensure all legal documents are accurate, enforceable, and aligned with the company’s risk management objectives.
- Maintain an organized filing and tracking system for contracts and legal correspondence.
- Ensure timely and compliant filing of all legal documents with regulatory bodies such as the Registrar General and BNR.
- Identify legal risks in proposed business decisions and recommend solutions.
- Support the Legal Manager in managing litigation cases and coordinate with external counsel when needed.
- Assist in resolving internal and external legal disputes and advise on best legal strategies.
- Keep accurate and up-to-date records of all insurance policies, claims, and renewals.
REQUIRED PROFILE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law, or a related field.
- Proven work experience of at least 2 years in a banking institution, law firm, or corporate legal department.
- Knowledge and understanding of corporate law, legal requirements and procedures.
- Experience in financial services or regulatory environments is highly desirable
- Full comprehension of the influences of the external environment of a corporation.
- Demonstrated ability to create legal defensive or proactive strategies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent legal drafting and research skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Influencing skills.
- Excellent organization and time management.
- Discretion and diplomacy.
