About the Position

Job Title: Demo Farm Tractor Operator / Mechanic

Reporting to: Demo Farm Manager

Contract Terms: Open Ended

Number of Position: Two

The Demo Farm Tractor Operator/Mechanic will be responsible for operating, servicing, maintaining, and repairing tractors and agricultural machinery to support crop production, forage harvesting, livestock feeding, and other mechanized farm operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring high equipment availability and supporting the efficient operation of the Demo Farm, including mechanized activities for a zero-grazing dairy unit of more than 120 cows.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Safely operate agricultural tractors, including high-horsepower tractors (up to 150 HP).
  • Perform mechanized field operations including land preparation, planting, fertilizer application, spraying, harvesting, forage collection, baling, silage production, and transportation.
  • Operate and maintain agricultural machinery such as feed mixers, balers, slurry tanks, boom sprayers, planters, fertilizer spreaders, mowers, trailers, ploughs, disc harrows, and other farm implements.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine faults on tractors and agricultural equipment.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance and routine servicing to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of fuel consumption, machine operating hours, maintenance activities, spare parts used, and daily field operations.
  • Operate company utility vehicles when required for operational purposes.
  • Diagnose basic mechanical faults on company vehicles and coordinate repairs with external garages where necessary.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Demo Farm Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Advanced Level (A2) Certificate in Automotive Mechanics, Agricultural Mechanization, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Additional vocational or technical certification in agricultural machinery maintenance will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • At least five (5) years of proven experience in operating and repairing agricultural tractors and farm machinery.
  • Experience working on a commercial farm or mechanized agricultural enterprise is highly desirable.

Mandatory Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold valid Driving License Category F & B.
  • Be willing to reside in the rural duty station at Karushuga, Nyagatare District.
  • Demonstrate practical experience operating agricultural machinery for both crop and livestock production.
  • Be competent in servicing and repairing tractors (including tractors up to 150 HP) and their implements.
  • Have proven experience maintaining agricultural equipment such as balers, slurry tanks, fodder mixers, boom sprayers, and related machinery.
  • Demonstrate the ability to inspect, diagnose, and carry out repairs on company utility vehicles.

Added Advantage

The following qualifications will be considered an added advantage:

  • Valid Category D Driving License.
  • Experience in commercial dairy or forage production systems.
  • Knowledge of modern agricultural mechanization and equipment management.

Required Competencies

  • Strong tractor operation and machinery handling skills.
  • Excellent mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities.
  • Sound knowledge of preventive maintenance practices.
