Job Summary

Graduate Laboratory Technician is an entry-level role designed for individuals who are starting their careers in the mining, metallurgy, or laboratory sciences field. This position provides support in the day-to-day operations of the laboratory by assisting in sample preparation, conducting basic analyses, and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results. The Graduate Laboratory Technician will develop technical skills under the guidance of senior staff while contributing to the operational success of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:

Sample preparation and analysis support

  • Assist in the preparation of samples for chemical and instrumental analyses, including wet chemistry and XRF tests.
  • Supervise the sample preparation activity across the Laboratory.
  • Get trained for routine analyses under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of samples according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Receive and record all samples submitted to the laboratory.

Quality control and assurance

  • Assist in implementing quality control procedures, such as ensuring the correct use of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), blanks, and duplicates.
  • Maintain proper documentation of test results and assist in the identification of any deviations from expected results.
  • Participate in quality checks and contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory practices.

Laboratory equipment and maintenance

  • Operate basic laboratory instruments and equipment with guidance.
  • Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and functioning as required.
  • Report any issues with laboratory equipment or tools to the Laboratory technician for troubleshooting.

Safety and compliance

  • Follow safety protocols and standard operating procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Handle chemicals, reagents, and hazardous materials safely according to laboratory guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, organized laboratory workspace.

Reporting and documentation

  • Label and track samples appropriately to ensure traceability and proper storage.
  • Assist in generating basic analytical reports and documentation as required.

Team Collaboration & Development

  • Work closely with senior laboratory staff, including Laboratory Technicians and Analysts, to ensure smooth operations.
  • Participate in training sessions to develop technical laboratory skills and improve analytical techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with laboratory team members to support laboratory functions.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Geology, or a related field.
  • Recent graduate with little or no professional experience in a laboratory environment.
  • A keen interest in laboratory work, mining, and metallurgical processes.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety and quality control procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and ability to follow instructions.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
