A. About GIZ and the Cluster / Project
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally owned international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. The GIZ Office in Kigali covers GIZ's portfolio in Rwanda and Burundi. GIZ Rwanda/Burundi implements projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union and other commissioning authorities in the following priority areas: Sustainable Economic Development; Good Governance; Climate, Energy and Sustainable Urban Development; Digital Transformation and Digital Economy; and regional projects in the Great Lakes Region.
Summary of the Cluster
The Great Lakes Region (GLR) Cluster consists of two regional projects "Cooperation on peace, security and responsible resource governance in the Great Lakes Region of Africa" and "Incorporating local perspectives in the implementation of the Women, Peace & Security in the Great Lakes Region". The main thematic areas of the cluster are mineral governance as well as (Women), Peace & Security.
The iWPS Project aims to improve conditions for a more systemic implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda at the local, national and regional levels in the Great Lakes Region. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ, the project contributes to Germany's feminist development policy. The project focuses on three key areas: (i) capacity-building and funding of grassroots initiatives related to implementation of the WPS agenda; (ii) advocacy and networking by civil society on the localization of the WPS agenda; (iii) monitoring, reporting and knowledge management on the WPS agenda.
B. Candidate Profile
- University studies and/or initial work experience in communications and/or journalism work
- Interest in or basic understanding of the Great Lakes Region and development cooperation
- Openness to working in an international and intercultural team
- Basic knowledge or strong interest in the Women, Peace and Security agenda
C. Responsibilities
- Overseeing a contract with a media house and coordinating related activities
- Develop project communications material and social media content on events implemented by the project, including communication plans for events
- Assist the team in the preparation of events, especially regarding communications aspects (banners, photography coverage etc.) and reporting
- Supporting with the implementation of the project's communications strategy
- Advising the team and partners about branding
D. Tasks
- Coordination of activities related to the implementation of a media house contract, including organization and follow-up of coordination meetings with the contractor (preparation of agendas, meeting minutes, background documents)
- Drafting of communication plans and branding products for events
- Drafting of social media content and liaising with GIZ country office for publication
- Drafting of communication plans and other communication products (factsheets etc.)
- Management of information and knowledge, archiving
E. Required Qualifications, Competences and Experience
1. Qualifications and professional experience
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a university degree in communications or journalism
- First internship or work experience in communications or journalism is an asset
- Understanding of peace and security or development cooperation initiatives, preferably in the context of the Great Lakes Region
- Proven experience in digital writing (blogging etc.)
- Proven understanding of the different stages in implementing a communications strategy, including digital communication strategy (for example through first internship experience)
- Basic understanding of project management principles, including planning and reporting
- Innovation and creativity
2. Other knowledge and additional competences
- Oral and written proficiency in English (C1 level), French knowledge (B2)
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint), and relevant internet and email software
- Knowledge of digital publication tools (Wordpress, Canva, pictochart, adobe InDesign etc.) is an asset
- Good communication skills, team spirit, intercultural sensitivity, and willingness to learn
- Ability to learn quickly, attention to detail, and organizational skills
- Willingness and flexibility to travel inside the region when required
