Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities of the Laboratory technician.
- Liaise with academic staff to plan timetables, laboratory equipment, and work plans.
- Prepare and run trial experiments before classes and demonstrate practical techniques to students.
- Set up laboratory equipment and materials prior to lessons, from basic apparatus to microscopes and other scientific instruments.
- Maintain, calibrate, and repair laboratory equipment and apparatus as needed.
- Keep accurate records of students’ practical sessions, experiments, and results.
- Ensure proper cleaning of equipment and safe storage of chemicals and other laboratory materials.
- Catalog and organize experimental recordings, making them accessible to staff and students.
- Support teachers during laboratory sessions, providing technical guidance and advice.
- Work with individual students to support practical research and experimental learning.
- Manage stock levels of chemicals and laboratory equipment.
- Enforce and ensure compliance with health and safety procedures at all times.
- Coordinate laboratory activities to optimize the use of resources and equipment.
- Undertake pastoral responsibilities, such as acting as a form tutor and supporting students academically and personally.
- Prepare students for examinations and assessments.
- Manage student behavior in the laboratory and other school areas, applying appropriate interventions.
- Supervise and support the broader school community in laboratory-related activities.
- Participate in and organize extracurricular activities, including science fairs, outings, and school events.
- Attend meetings, parent visits, and whole-school training events as required.
- Engage in continuous professional development, including regular observations and in-service training.
- Support and record student progress in alignment with the school’s Christian values and culture of learning.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of knowledge and skills required by this role.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education Science with specialization in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or General Science.
- Additional Qualifications: Certifications in laboratory safety or educational pedagogy are an advantage.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a school laboratory environment; experience in an international school is considered a strong advantage.
- Proven experience preparing and managing practical science lessons, experiments, and laboratory equipment.
- Strong knowledge of science laboratory equipment, materials, and safety protocols.
- Ability to support teachers and students effectively in practical science lessons.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to fostering a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-cultural school setting.
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of the school.
