A MECHANIC ASSISTANT (2 POSITIONS)
Responsibilities or duties
1. Position/Job Title: Mechanical Assistant
2. Grade: B3
3. Department: Engineering
4. Reports To: Mechanical Supervisor
5. Job Brief: A Mechanic Assistant is responsible for supporting the Mechanic in maintenance and repairing all mining machinery, vehicles and equipment, ensuring optimal functionality to support the continuous operation of the mining site. This role requires an understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and auto electrical components, with a strong focus on health and safety and preventive maintenance.
6. Key Responsibilities: A Mechanic Assistant has the following responsibilities and duties:
- i. Assists in the Maintenance and Repair:
- Performing scheduled preventive maintenance on all mining machinery, vehicles, and equipment to prevent breakdowns and extend their operational life.
- Diagnosing, troubleshooting and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and auto-electrical issues on heavy mining equipment and vehicles.
- ii. Assists in Spare Parts Management:
- Identification of the required spare parts and tools necessary for repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Maintenance of accurate inventory of spare parts and tools, ensuring timely procurement and availability.
- iii. Assists in Inspections and Diagnostics:
- Conducting routine inspections of all mining machinery and vehicles to detect early signs of wear, damage, or failure.
- Utilizing diagnostic tools and equipment to identify and address issues promptly.
- iv. Health and Safety Compliance:
- Ensure all maintenance activities are performed in compliance with all Company policies, procedures, instructions and safety standards and environmental regulations.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and risk assessments to promote a safe working environment.
- v. Documentation and Reporting:
- Accurately document all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, time spent, and issues encountered.
- Report any recurring mechanical issues, safety concerns or potential improvements to the Mechanical Supervisor.
- vi. Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with other maintenance team members and sections to ensure seamless operations and minimize downtime.
- Provide technical support and guidance to less experienced mechanics, Assistant Mechanics or Apprentices.
- vii. Continuous Improvement:
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, contributing ideas for enhancing maintenance practices, equipment reliability and overall efficiency.
- viii. Emergency Response:
- Be on call for emergency repairs and maintenance outside of regular working hours to ensure minimal disruption to mining operations.
- ix. Other Responsibilities:
- Comply with Company work and leave schedules.
- Comply with all Company policies, procedures and instructions.
- Perform other duties as required by the Superior or Management, within the scope of the role.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
7. Job Requirements: A Mechanic should have the following education,
experience and skills:
- i. Education and Certification:
- A minimum of TVET Certificate Level III in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Technology or a related field.
- Professional certification in maintenance (e.g., Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician) is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license Category B & F is a plus.
- ii. Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a mechanical role.
- Proven experience in troubleshooting and repairing machinery.
- iii. Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and service manuals.
- iv. Soft Skills:
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- High level of attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Ability to use and work with English as the business language.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively, especially in a high-demand mining environment.
- v. Physical Requirements:
- Physically fit to handle the demands of the job, including lifting heavy parts and working in confined spaces.
- Willingness to work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme weather, as typical of a mining operation.
- vi. Other Requirements:
- Willing to work overtime, including weekends and public holidays, as required.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning new technologies relevant to the role.
