Organic Fertilizer Expert (m/f/d)

Location: Rwanda

Assignment Period: 08/25 – 11/25

Working time scope: 20 working days

Project: Pilot SME Support Scheme targeting growth-oriented SMEs in Rwanda in the Special Initiative "Decent Work for a Just Transition"

The Project

Within the Special Initiative "Decent Work for a Just Transition" of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented among others by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, sequa implements the project "Pilot SME Support Scheme targeting growth-orientated SMEs" in Rwanda. sequa aims to facilitate business growth and job creation of Rwandan small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by increasing their competitiveness and productivity so that their products and services will satisfy the demand on local and international markets. A specific focus will be provided on women-owned SMEs, job creation, and employability training for women. No sectoral focus is foreseen.

Benefiting companies receive flexible and demand-oriented funding (management consulting, technical training, financial competence/business plan development, qualification, applied research activities, etc.). The support scheme will contribute to SMEs' change management and business growth. The SME Support Scheme supports five medium-sized enterprises, such as Agasaro Organic, with growth and job creation potential. The scope of this assignment is to support Agasaro Organic in developing an organic fertilizer based on pineapple waste.

Your Tasks / Responsibilities

Phase I: Ideation and Feasibility

  • Propose at least two viable models for organic fertilizer production (e.g., solid compost vs. liquid extract) using pineapple waste.
  • Assess the technical feasibility of each model, considering input availability, processing requirements, and end-product quality.
  • Conduct a basic cost-benefit analysis for each option, including CAPEX and OPEX.
  • Advise on suitable machinery/equipment needed for small-to-medium-scale production.
  • Outline a roadmap for implementation, including timelines, milestones, and investment requirements.
  • Present feasibility findings and recommendations to sequa and Agasaro Organic for decision-making.
  • Evaluate the technical feasibility of producing high-quality compost under the current conditions of Agasaro Organic.

Phase II: Implementation

  • Work collaboratively with the Agasaro Organic team to refine the selected organic fertilizer formula.
  • Provide technical assistance in the registration process with relevant Rwandan authorities like RICA, RAB, etc.
  • Train the Agasaro Organic production team on best practices for producing high-quality compost or liquid fertilizer.
  • Develop clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for proper fertilizer usage tailored for smallholder farmers.
  • Deliver a training-of-trainers session for Agasaro Organic staff to enable them to educate partner farmers effectively.
  • Provide final documentation, including production guidelines, usage instructions, and training materials.

Your Qualifications / Skills

  • Education/training: Advanced university degree in Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Soil Science, or related field.
  • Languages: Proficient communication skills in English (knowledge of Kinyarwanda is advantageous).
  • Other Skills: Strong communication skills; good presentation skills; full computer literacy; outstanding writing and reporting skills in English; Strong skills in farmer training and community engagement; deep understanding of composting technologies, organic input quality standards, and agricultural waste processing

Your Working Experience

  • General professional experience: At least 7 years of experience in compost fertilizer production with proven results.
  • Specific professional experience: Experience working with or within large multinational compost or organic input producers; prior engagement in technical assistance projects focused on product quality, waste valorisation, and farmer training.
  • Regional experience: Experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa or comparable emerging markets is desirable.
