The Principal Role
The Principal will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Fortis Green Renewables’ investment activities, from pipeline development to deal execution and portfolio oversight. You will lead deal sourcing, transaction evaluation, due diligence, and ongoing asset management. You will also oversee and expand the firm’s Associate and Analyst pool, fostering a high-performance culture within the investment team.
As Fortis Green Renewables launches its second fund, you will play a supporting role in the fundraising process, working closely with senior leadership on investor outreach, fund marketing, and closing efforts.
This role will be based in either Kigali or Nairobi and will report to the Managing Director / Head of Investments, Benito Grimaudo, in close partnership with Managing Director, Jonathan Shafer.
Responsibilities:
Investment Sourcing & Execution
- Identify and source high-quality investment opportunities across Sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring alignment with the Fortis Green’s investment strategy.
- Lead and coordinate all aspects of investment due diligence, from the initial investment screen to financial modeling, Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) assessment, market analysis, risk assessments, and technical evaluations.
- Present investment opportunities to the Investment Committee, providing clear recommendations backed by robust analyses.
- Negotiate term sheets, transaction documents, and closing processes in collaboration with legal and technical advisors.
Portfolio Management
- Oversee active portfolio companies/projects, tracking financial and operational performance.
- Engage with investee management teams, project sponsors, and other stakeholders to optimize performance and ensure compliance with contractual and ESG commitments.
- Identify opportunities for portfolio value creation, risk mitigation, and strategic exits.
Team Leadership & Development
- Manage and mentor Associates and Analysts, fostering technical skill development and sector expertise.
- Recruit, train, and expand the investment team to meet the growing needs of the firm.
Fundraising & Investor Relations
- Support firm leadership in the fundraising process for Fortis Green Renewables’ Green Fund II
- Prepare and deliver materials for prospective investors, including presentations, due diligence responses, and data room documentation.
- Participate in investor meetings and maintain relationships with current and prospective LPs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree or credential (MBA, MSc, CFA) preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in private equity, project finance, infrastructure, or investment banking, with significant exposure to renewable energy or infrastructure in emerging markets (preferably African).
- Strong understanding of project finance structures, regulatory frameworks, and energy markets in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Proven track record of executing investment transactions from sourcing through closing.
- Excellent negotiation, critical thinking, analytical, and financial modeling skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience managing teams.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage confidently with senior stakeholders, investors, and partners.
- Willingness to travel extensively across Sub-Saharan Africa.
