DUHAMIC-ADRI, in partnership with European Union funding through Oxfam in Rwanda, is implementing a 4-year project, named “Sustainable livelihoods in horticulture value chains” The project aims to unlock the potential of Rwanda’s horticulture value chains, ensuring sustainable supply of safe and high-quality products to local, regional and international markets. The project objectives will be achieved by applying inclusive business approaches that combine private sector development with inclusive growth objectives. Furthermore, the project will reduce food losses and increase value chain efficiencies, improve food safety, promote inclusion of entrepreneurial small holders and use climate smart technologies.
According to the report of assessment conducted on aggregators ’enterprises capacity (input suppliers, producers, processors and aggregators) in horticulture value chain in Rulindo District, Farmers in chili cultivation stated the lack of planting materials as a big barrier to invest in chili cultivation. They said “We use to cultivate indigenous/local varieties which are sold at the local market. We don’t generate income from those local varieties. Chili varieties which are needed to regional and international markets are not affordable and accessible to small holder farmers as their planting materials are imported from outside the country at big price” This challenge was also indicated by potential exporters that were interviewed including Virunga Ltd, Bahage company Ltd, Crinnod Ltd where they said that if farmers get improved chili planting materials, it can increase the potential of chili exporters as they will be able to export a high quantity of chili production. Moreover, local authorities involved in project implementation also stated that the project outcomes regarding chili cannot be achieved while farmers do not access to improved planting materials.
To increase access and capacity to respond to demand/supply local, regional and international markets by increasing efficiency and productivity gains in horticulture supply chain, there is a need to purchase and distribute improved chili planting material of the varieties which are needed at the international markets targeting to increase the quantity and quality of horticulture production that is sold to international markets.
