Job Brief

To supervise the safe, efficient and compliant day-to-day operation of the Water Treatment Plant, ensuring effective treatment of mine-impacted water, proper chemical dosing, equipment reliability, water-quality compliance, sludge management and accurate operational reporting.

Responsibilities

The Water Treatment Plant supervisor has the following responsibilities and duties:

  • Supervise the day-to-day operation of the Water Treatment Plant in accordance with operating procedures and environmental requirements.
  • Coordinate WTP start-up, normal operation, shutdown and restart activities.
  • Monitor key treatment parameters including flow, pH, water levels, chemical dosing, turbidity and treatment performance.
  • Supervise lime, flocculant and other chemical preparation, dosing, storage and safe handling.
  • Optimize chemical dosing based on raw-water characteristics, treatment performance, settling/jar test results and approved operating limits.
  • Monitor coagulation, flocculation, settling/clarification and other treatment processes to ensure effective removal of contaminants.
  • Immediately report and respond to abnormal water-quality conditions, acidic discharge, uncontrolled discharge and other WTP-related environmental non-conformances.
  • Supervise WTP Operators, allocate daily duties and ensure compliance with approved procedures and safety requirements.
  • Conduct routine inspections of dosing systems, tanks and other WTP equipments.
  • Coordinate with Engineering department on preventive and corrective maintenance of WTP equipment.
  • Identify and troubleshoot operational problems and ensure timely corrective actions are implemented.
  • Supervise sludge handling, storage, dewatering and disposal in accordance with approved environmental requirements.
  • Ensure safe chemical handling, appropriate PPE, good housekeeping and effective control of WTP health, safety and environmental risks.
  • Ensure emergency procedures are followed during chemical spills, equipment failures, power interruptions, process failures and other WTP emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate daily WTP operating records, including flow, pH, chemical consumption, dosing rates, equipment status and operational observations.
  • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly WTP operational reports and provide updates to the line manager.
  • Support environmental inspections, audits, regulatory inspections and investigations related to WTP operations.
  • Participate in chemical trials, jar/settling tests and other process optimization activities to improve treatment efficiency and reduce chemical consumption.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in WTP performance, reliability, safety and operational efficiency.
  • Support implementation, commissioning and monitoring of WTP upgrades, modifications and new treatment equipment.
  • Ensure WTP SOPs, work instructions, checklists and operational records are implemented and kept up to date.
  • Identify training needs and provide coaching, toolbox talks and operational guidance to WTP personnel.
  • Perform any other WTP-related duties assigned by the Environment and Community Superintendent.

Job Requirements

Water Treatment Plant Supervisor should have the following education, experience and skills:

Education

  • Advanced Diploma/Diploma in Environmental Engineering/Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Process Engineering or a related discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in water treatment, wastewater treatment, industrial water management, mining water management or a related field, including supervisory or team-lead experience.

Skills

  • Practical knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes, including pH correction, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation/clarification, filtration and sludge management.
  • Practical experience in chemical preparation, dosing and optimization, particularly lime and coagulants/flocculants.
  • Good understanding of water-quality parameters including pH, turbidity, flow, conductivity and other relevant treatment parameters.
  • Knowledge of chemical handling, PPE, Safety Dats Sheets requirements, spill response and WTP-related HSE requirements.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance requirements related to wastewater treatment and discharge.
  • Good computer skills for operational data recording, analysis and reporting.
  • Strong communication, coordination, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work in the field, under pressure, and flexibly work any shift, including day and night shifts, as required.
