Background
Water Access Rwanda has a simple vision: safe water at the turn of a tap. We believe water should be reliable (no outages), safe (to drink), conveniently accessible in the home, and super affordable. We are making it happen with our record-breaking INUMA(TM) Minigrids.
The main purpose of the 6-month apprenticeship at Water Access Rwanda is to train the apprentice in specific technical deliverables in the company in support of their main team assignment. The apprenticeship is hands-on, allowing the apprentice to develop employable skillsets both within Water Access Rwanda and elsewhere. At the end of the apprenticeship, the most promising candidates may be offered full-time employment while others are kept on a roster for future openings.
Job Summary:
The Welder Apprentice will support our welding team in constructing and maintaining modular structures for kiosks and other projects. This role is designed for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in welding and metalwork, with opportunities for learning and development under the guidance of experienced welders.
Key Result Areas:
- Skill Development: Demonstrate progress in welding skills and knowledge through active participation in training and practical tasks.
- Efficiency: Assist in completing welding tasks within allocated time frames while maintaining quality standards.
- Safety: Adhere to safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in Welding Tasks: Support the welding team in assembling and welding modular parts according to pre-established designs, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Preparation of Materials: Help prepare metal parts and materials for welding, including cutting, cleaning, and positioning.
- Maintenance of Tools and Equipment: Assist in maintaining welding tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment in the workshop.
- Learning and Development: Participate in training sessions and on-the-job learning opportunities to develop welding skills and knowledge.
- Support in Jig and Frame Development: Aid in the development and improvement of jigs and frames under the direction of the welding specialist.
- Field Support: Assist in the setup and maintenance of field jigs and frames, including foundation forms, elevated tank forms, manholes, and meter stands.
- Routine Maintenance: Help with routine maintenance tasks such as painting and repairing metal structures to ensure the longevity of existing mini-grids.
Qualifications Required
- TVET Certificate in Welding or related fields
- A1 Certificate in Welding/ Manufacturing Production

- Basic understanding of welding techniques and tools.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Basic knowledge of safety practices in a workshop environment.
- Physical Strength: Physical strength may be required for certain tasks.
- Hand-Eye Coordination: This is important for tasks that require precise movements.
Water Access Rwanda comprises a team of accountable, passionate and driven employees. Any new employee/apprentice should reflect these key characteristic traits:
- Accountability: Sees themselves as primary responsible party charged to deliver all necessary resources in achieving assigned or commonly desirable outcomes of the company.
- Problem-Solving on Time: Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve problems that arise, keeping in mind the time it takes to identify a solution, and escalating to supervisors or wider team as needed.
- Communication: Ability to communicate with emphasis on documentation effectively and reporting of any happening for future reference and troubleshooting.

Benefits:
- A Monthly Compensation of RWF 150,000 will be provided to all apprentices to assist with transport, food and temporary accommodation.
- Access to sites for work will be provided. There is no other compensation or benefits beyond this and successful candidates will sign a waiver in this regard.
