The Project

Within the Special Initiative "Decent Work for a Just Transition" of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented among others by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, sequa implements the project "Pilot SME Support Scheme targeting growth-oriented SMEs" in Rwanda. sequa aims to facilitate business growth and job creation of Rwandan small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by increasing their competitiveness and productivity so that their products and services will satisfy the demand in local and international markets. A specific focus will be provided on women-owned SMEs, job creation, and employability training for women. No sectoral focus is foreseen.

Benefiting companies receive flexible and demand-oriented funding (management consulting, technical training, financial competence/business plan development, qualification, applied research activities, etc.). The support scheme will contribute to SMEs' change management and business growth.

The SME Support Scheme supports five medium-sized enterprises with growth and job creation potential. As part of this initiative, a two-day workshop on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) will be organized for five selected SME owners. The goal is to raise awareness, build foundational ERM capacity, and equip participants with individual action plans to mitigate risks and seize opportunities effectively.

Your Tasks / Responsibilities

Pre-training preparation:

  • Review gap assessment results and ERM maturity diagnostics of each SME (provided by sequa).
  • Adapt and contextualize workshop content, tools, and case studies.

Training delivery:

  • Conduct a two-day interactive workshop on Enterprise Risk Management, including:
    • Introduction to ERM core concepts tailored for SMEs.
    • Risk identification across strategic, financial, operational, environmental, legal, and reputational dimensions.
    • Use of tools like Risk Matrix, Scenario Planning, and Key Risk Indicators (KRIs).
    • Risk prioritization and treatment strategies (avoidance, mitigation, transfer, acceptance).
    • Statutory compliance, insurance, and contingency planning.
    • Sub-group analysis of real-life SME case studies followed by full-group discussion.

Individual coaching during the workshop:

  • Facilitate mini one-on-one or guided sessions to help each enterprise design its ERM Action Plan aligned with the SMART framework.

Post-training reporting:

  • Deliver a concise summary report highlighting workshop outcomes, case insights, and recommended next steps for SMEs and their coaches.

Your Qualifications / Skills

  • Education/Training: Master's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, or related field
  • Languages: Full working proficiency in English and preferably Kinyarwanda
  • Other Skills: Strong facilitation and coaching skills; excellent communication; ability to simplify technical concepts for SME audiences

Your Working Experience

  • General professional experience: Minimum 8 years of professional experience in risk management, business advisory, or private sector development
  • Specific professional experience: At least 5 years in developing and implementing ERM frameworks for SMEs or similar businesses
  • Regional experience: Proven experience working with Rwandan SMEs or within East Africa
  • Other experience: Prior training or workshop facilitation for adult learners, preferably in enterprise development contexts
