Biosafety Specialist job at Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA)
Job Description
Reporting to the Environment Mainstreaming and Biodiversity Management Program Manager, the Biosafety Specialist will assist in the implementation and assessment of biosafety-related programs across the country. The role involves working closely with the National Competent Authority and the Biosafety Committee, developing and delivering biosafety capacity building programs, supporting monitoring and evaluation processes, and contributing to the development of biosafety legislation and policy frameworks. Additionally, the specialist will lead planning and reporting processes for biodiversity management, support risk assessments and risk management strategies, and maintain up-to-date biodiversity databases and statistics.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist in coordinating implementation of international and national biosafety-related agreements.
- Support the implementation and assessment of national biosafety programs and activities.
- Assist in developing and delivering biosafety capacity building and awareness programs.
- Collaborate with the Biosafety Committee on all relevant matters.
- Support the National Competent Authority in handling applications, issuing permits, and making decisions regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
- Monitor and evaluate biosafety activities across the country.
- Assist in biosafety risk assessment and management processes.
- Support the institution on matters of biosafety liability and redress.
- Contribute to the development of biosafety policies, strategies, programs, and legislation.
- Lead planning and statutory reporting processes for biodiversity conservation.
- Maintain comprehensive biodiversity-related databases and statistical records.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in biosafety, biodiversity, or a related domain.
- Strong understanding of national and international biosafety frameworks and protocols.
- Knowledge of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and related regulatory procedures.
- Experience in project planning, monitoring, and reporting.
- Excellent communication, coordination, and collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in using relevant computer software and database management tools.
