We are seeking an experienced Construction Project Manager to lead the on-site delivery of a one-time project for the construction of the African Conservation Academy campus, situated in Akagera National Park, Rwanda. The African Conservation Academy is an exciting initiative that will establish a new benchmark for conservation leadership training in Africa. The purpose-built campus has been architecturally designed to facilitate the highest standards in professional training at the same time as being exemplary in terms of eco-development and social impact. This role represents an incredible opportunity to have tangible input into the development of this one-of-a-kind training facility.

Responsibilities or duties

The Construction Project Manager is accountable for the day-to-day management of construction activities and overall site performance from mobilization through completion and handover, ensuring execution is in alignment with the approved project scope, schedule, and budget. The role combines hands-on site leadership with strong project management responsibilities, including cost control, progress tracking, risk management, and formal reporting to African Parks, project stakeholders and regulatory bodies. They will be on the on-site representative responsible for coordinating closely with architects, consultants and contractors to ensure the work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards and regulations.

Qualifications or requirements

  • Proven experience as a Site Manager, Construction Project Manager, or similar role
  • Strong understanding of construction project management, budgeting, and scheduling
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, and contracts
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • OSHA or equivalent safety certification preferred
  • Valid driver’s license essential

Experience needed

  • Experience delivering large-scale or multi-building projects (campus, institutional, commercial, or mixed-use preferred)
  • Experience of construction projects that involve sensitive environmental and social environments would be an advantage

Any other provided details

Contract: Fixed-term - 18 months in duration. Full-time, on-site position aligned with the project schedule. NB this position is contingent on the issuance of the necessary building permits.

  • Manage on-site execution of the campus construction project in accordance with the approved project plan
  • Oversee procurement and track project costs, monitor expenditures, and support budget control to minimize overruns
  • Oversee daily construction activities and supervise site personnel and subcontractors to ensure efficient sequencing of work
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate labour, materials, and equipment are available as planned
  • Act as the primary on-site liaison with architects, engineers, and consultants
  • Ensure construction aligns with design intent, drawings, and specifications
  • Ensure all construction work meets quality standards, building codes, and regulatory requirements including health & safety regulations and site-specific conditions stipulated in the building permit and Environmental & Social Impact Assessment certificate
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for African Parks and project stakeholders, communicating issues, decisions, and recommendations clearly and proactively
  • Prepare and deliver regular progress reports covering schedule, budget, risks, quality and compliance
  • Maintain accurate site records, reports, and construction documentation
  • Support commissioning, inspections, punch lists, and final handover and ensure completion of as-built documentation and close-out requirements
