EcoPlanet Bamboo is leading the commercialization of bamboo as a sustainable, deforestation-free, climate friendly, alternative fibre for some of the world's largest industries. Our operations are expanding with carbon financed bamboo farms in Nicaragua, South Africa, Ghana, Rwanda and the Philippines. Our projects apply our successful model of landscape restoration, providing a solution to three of the world's most critical environmental problems: the need for effective solutions to mitigate global climate change; holistic restoration of the world's most degraded landscapes; and a growing population that requires sustainable alternatives for consumer products and markets that still contribute to deforestation and deforestation driven emissions.

In Rwanda, our projects are providing environmental solutions that protect watersheds through riparian plantings and expand the habitat of endangered Mountain Gorillas.

The role

The organization is seeking an experienced Field Technician to take on the planning, coordination, and supervision of bamboo field operations, ensuring high-quality planting and maintenance, effective team management, accurate field monitoring and reporting, compliance with health and safety standards, and strong engagement with local communities to assist successful project delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Assign work schedules to team leaders, bamboo rangers, and field workers.
• Train team leaders and field workers in bamboo silviculture techniques, including land preparation, plant loading/offloading and transport, planting, and maintenance activities such as weeding, mulching, and watering.
• Oversee all field activities, including the security of plants in the field.
• keep health and safety protocols in the field.
• track plant health, including environmental stress, community-related challenges, animal, pest, and disease damage; carry out corrective measures as needed.
• deliver a weekly report on field operations and monitoring.
• Collect monitoring data daily during ground-truthing, planting, and maintenance activities.
• Engage with community stakeholders, including attending meetings and supporting conflict resolution.
• Adapt to new challenges and continuously create new skills.
• Perform other duties as reasonably requested by the project.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Advanced Diploma in Forestry, Agroforestry, Agriculture, or a related field.
• Strong group and community facilitation and training skills.
• Proficiency with smartphone applications.
• Computer literacy in Word and Excel.
• Demonstrable experience in data collection and use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
• Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda.
• Willingness to work hands-on in the field in all weather conditions.
• A valid motorcycle driving licence with a clean driving record is required.
• Location preference: candidates from the project's districts of operation (Ruhango, Gisagara, Rutsiro, Nyamagabe, and Nyamasheke) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Work Experience

Minimum two years of work experience in forestry, agroforestry, or rural livelihoods programmes.

Experience with bamboo plantations is an added advantage.
