A. About GIZ and the Project

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally owned international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. The GIZ Office in Kigali covers GIZ’s portfolio in Rwanda and Burundi and as well as selected regional activities and projects. GIZ Rwanda/Burundi implements projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Union and other commissioning authorities in the following priority areas: Sustainable Economic Development; Good Governance; Climate, Energy and Sustainable Urban Development; Digital Transformation and Digital Economy; and regional projects in the Great Lakes Region.

The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a program for violence prevention and peacebuilding in crisis and conflict regions. CPS professionals provide long-term support to people on the ground in their commitment to dialogue, human rights and peace. The GIZ regional CPS program " Promoting peacebuilding and civil society cooperation in the Great Lakes region" aims to promote non-violent conflict transformation skills and respective civil society networks in the Great Lakes region.

GIZ would like to recruit the candidate for the position of peace building advisor for ZFD Great Lakes Program. The peace building advisor will be integrated into the partner organisation (70%) and support the overall program (30%).

Your Role & Responsibilities

The peace building advisor performs the following responsibilities and tasks:

The peace building advisor is responsible for:

  • Development and implementation of training and workshops on instruments and methods of non-violent conflict transformation
  • Enhance the capacity of all CPS Great Lakes partner organisations in the field of non-violent conflict transformation including a focus on process-orientation
  • Strengthen the capacity of all CPS Great Lakes partner organisation in building regional connections and spaces for cooperation and exchange
  • Contribute to program development and capacity building measures of the overall CPS program in the Great Lakes region

C. Tasks

The Technical Advisor performs the following tasks:

  • Strengthening institutional structures to consolidate and enhance the CPS partner organization in providing quality training in non-violent conflict transformation
  • Support the partner organisation’s community outreach as well as cross border initiatives and cooperation
  • Support development and sustainability of the partner organisation’s regional youth network
  • Support regional and international networking endeavours of the partner organisation

As well as (30%)

  • Support the development program and capacity building measures of the overall CPS program in the Great Lakes region
  • Support local and regional process-oriented peacebuilding interventions
  • Coordinate with CPS team colleagues in developing new peacebuilding initiatives and interventions

Another duties/additional task

  • Perform other duties and tasks at the request of management.

D. Required Qualifications, Competences and Experience

1. Qualifications and professional experience

  • Master’s degree in peace and conflict studies or comparable education and experience relevant to peacebuilding and non-violent conflict transformation
  • At least three years working experience in the field of peacebuilding and non-violent conflict transformation
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in process-oriented peace building
  • Experience in program and project development in the field of peace building and non-violent conflict transformation in the NGO sector
  • High level of self-organisation, proactivity and resilience
  • Willingness and interest in getting involved in the organisational culture of a university

2. Other knowledge and additional competences

  • Readiness to travel in the region, including Burundi and DRC
  • Readiness to cooperate constructively with CPS Great Lakes partner organisations and team colleagues
  • High level of intercultural competence
  • Fluency in English and French
  • Fluency in Kinyarwanda is an added advantage
  • Holding a PhD is an added advantage
