GPI Rwanda

In Rwanda, GPI implements the “School-Based Integrated Nutrition and Hygiene Improvement Project in Nyamata and Mayange, Rwanda” across four target schools. The project aims to:

• Improve the nutrition of school meals and the hygiene environment.
• Enhance community awareness of healthy behaviors.

We are seeking a passionate and experienced professional to join our team and drive meaningful impacts in students’ nutritional status, hygiene environments, and daily practices.

I. Purpose of the Position

The NHIP Project Officer will support the planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of project activities related to nutrition, school feeding, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), school gardens, poultry production, and school infrastructure development.

The officer will ensure effective coordination with schools, local authorities, contractors, and partners to achieve project objectives and improve nutrition and hygiene outcomes in supported schools and communities.

II. Key Responsibilities

1. School Nutrition and Feeding

• Coordinate school feeding and nutrition interventions.
• Monitor kitchen equipment, feeding materials, and procurement follow-up.
• Oversee the implementation of nutrition and hygiene training alongside safe food handling practices.

2. School Gardens

• Support the establishment and maintenance of school gardens through regular monitoring.
• Coordinate closely with sector agronomists and school focal persons.
• Manage input supplies and promote irrigation and dry-season mitigation measures.

3. Poultry Projects

• Oversee poultry infrastructure development and beneficiary selection.
• Coordinate with technical service providers and facilitate relevant training.
• Monitor poultry health, production rates, and manage the final project handover.

4. WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)

• Coordinate water, hygiene, and sanitation activities across target schools.
• Oversee the installation and monitoring of WASH facilities and water systems.
• Drive hygiene promotion campaigns in collaboration with district and community structures

5. Infrastructure Monitoring

• Monitor the construction and rehabilitation of school infrastructure (kitchens, water systems, gutters, handwashing stations, and poultry facilities).
• Conduct regular site inspections, support quality assurance, and manage handovers.

6. Community Engagement

• Facilitate stakeholder meetings, community sensitization, and behavior change campaigns focusing on nutrition and hygiene.
• Work closely with local leaders, parents, and school committees.

7. Procurement & Contractors

• Support procurement processes and review vendor quotations.
• Monitor contractor performance, inspect deliveries, and verify completed works for payment processing.

8. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

• Conduct regular field monitoring visits and maintain precise project records.
• Prepare comprehensive activity, monitoring, and progress reports.
• Document lessons learned, challenges, and project success stories.

III. Qualifications & Experience

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition, or a related field.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in the public health sector, preferably within an NGO or development organization.

Sector Knowledge: Proven track record and knowledge of nutrition, school feeding, agriculture, and WASH programming.

Core Skills: Strong project coordination, communication and organizational skills, and a high level of proficiency in report writing and documentation.

Local Coordination: Demonstrated experience working harmoniously with schools and local government structures.

Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kinyarwanda.

Preferred Attribute: Strong experience in Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) within rural communities.

Personal Attributes: High level of self-motivation, professional integrity, and the ability to work independently while conducting frequent field visits.

IT Literacy: Proficiency in computer applications and software relevant to project management (MS Office suite, data tracking tools).
